Web Faceoff: Adobe Flash vs. HTML5

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 23-02-2010-05-2008

Every week, we pit two web apps or companies against each other in our web faceoff series. In the past, we’ve put Android vs. iPhone, Digg vs. Reddit, and Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard order to see which one was truly the people’s choice.

This week, we’re tweaking the competitors a bit. Over the last few weeks, you may have heard about a battle brewing between Adobe and Apple. It all started when Apple slyly revealed that the iPad would not support Flash.

This quickly broke out into a heated debate: Should we be abandoning Flash for HTML5, the new version of the web’s mark-up language that can support video, audio and more? Steve Jobs certainly thinks so.

Now with more people chiming in, we think it’s time to take the pulse of the people.

Which will eventually win out in the end: Adobe Flash or HTML5? Which is better for the future of the web? Do you think Apple has the muscle to take down Adobe’s widely used plug-in?

Make your choice in the poll below, which will close on Friday, February 27, at 12:00 p.m. PT. Then let us know your opinions on this matter in the comments.

SocialTALK Helps Businesses Diffuse Social Media Clutter

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 12-02-2010-05-2008

Although many businesses are starting to embrace social services and networks to connect with potential customers, such tools are still by and large built for end users, not for businesses. That can make managing multiple social media accounts, moderating comments and scheduling posts difficult.

Syncapse launched its SocialTALK social media workflow tool this week, which is designed to help companies control their presence on different platforms, as well as monitor feedback.

Social management tools are slowly starting to become more relevant. ContexOptional, Vitrue SRM and Salesforce.com are all targeting this space in various ways. SocialTALK’s approach to it is to plug into various platforms that can all be managed from one dashboard.

Check out this video:

Right now SocialTALK supports Twitter, Facebook, WordPress and MoveableType. You can create new posts, moderate comments, schedule when posts go out and push the same content across to multiple networks at once.

The organizational features are great, but the features that have the most potential are the real-time analytics. We’ve discussed measuring social media ROI before and as we said then, finding trends and tracking them back to their point of origin is the key to measuring ROI.

While analytics aren’t going to do that for you, if you can get a real-time measurement of traffic, discussion points and comments as they relate to various social media campaigns — and if you can add in identifiers to track that data to either a transaction or other measurable goal — taking control of social media ROI becomes much less difficult.

How does your business manage its social network presence? Let us know!

Meebo Bar Adds Facebook-like Notifications to Your Website

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 11-02-2010-05-2008

Meebo has added a Facebook-like notifications feature to the Meebo Bar.

The bar is an overlay that Meebo offers to website publishers that readers can use for instant messaging and other social activities. Now website owners can push notifications to readers regardless of where they are on the site.

The notifications pop up out of the bar just like in the picture we’ve included. They can be whatever the publisher wants them to be. The most obvious usage is to notify a reader of just-breaking news that they might not see if they’re not browsing the front page, but there are many other possibilities.

Meebo struck a deal with AdWeek, which will start using notifications immediately. That will give folks a way to see the bar in action when they’re thinking about whether or not they’d like to add it to their own sites.

The Meebo Bar is available to any blogger who uses Movable Type, Blogger, TypePad or WordPress — but not to bloggers who use WordPress.com as a host. Additional features like ad placement and custom IM networks are available through Meebo’s business channel. Meebo is more generally known for its web-based, multi-protocol instant messaging client.

Foursquare Beats Yelp and Gowalla in Reader Poll

It’s been another exciting week here in our long-running Faceoff Series. We pitted three of the top “check-in” location-based mobile services against each other to find out which among them is the preferred choice for Mashable readers.

The results are now in, and we’ve got ourselves a winner: Foursquare takes the title! With 47% of the vote, the service beat out check-in newcomer Yelp with 26% of the vote. Coming in close to Yelp in third place was Gowalla at 20% of the vote, and a 6% tie ballot rounded out this week’s faceoff.

Are you surprised by the results? Do you feel another candidate should have been included in the check-in services poll? Let us know in the comments.

Nexus One Crushes the iPhone 3GS in Reader Vote

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 16-01-2010-05-2008

I’m starting to think that Apple and the iPhone should be a bit concerned, because its Google-built Android rival is quickly gaining goodwill and market share.

Every week, we host a poll series on Mashable called the Web Faceoff, where we give you the reader a choice between two or three major tech or web-related products to choose from. In this week’s edition, we asked you to choose between the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS, two of the best smartphones on the market.

After more than 10,000 votes, the Nexus One has thoroughly annihilated the iPhone 3GS. The Nexus One captured a full 66% of the poll (6743 votes), while the iPhone 3GS was only able to muster 28% support (2818 votes). 592 of you declared it a tie.

This result almost exactly mirrors our Android vs. iPhone OS poll, where Android garnered 66% of the vote to the iPhone OS’s 30%. Still, we’re shocked that a device that’s only been out for a few weeks could crush Apple’s device so thoroughly.

Our conclusion: Android and the Nexus One are charging at full steam. If Apple isn’t careful, it could eventually find its cell phone in second place.

Collabtive Gives You Local Control Over Project Management [Downloads]

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 08-01-2010-05-2008

Web Server w/ PHP: If you’re not too keen on hosting your team’s projects on a 3rd party server—or pay the high fees associated with commercial project management tools—Collabtive is an open-source project management suite you can host yourself.

You’ll need a web server to host it on that has PHP on it, or if you want to use it on your local Windows machine you can install WAMP (we showed you how to install WAMP to host your own WordPress install and set up your own personal Wikipedia).

Once you have Collabtive up and running—you can try out their demo before you dive into downloading and installing it—you’ll be able to create projects and tasks, assign due dates to them, survey your project progress from the dashboard and calendar, and review project milestones. Because you run Collabtive on your own server, it’s possible to not only backup data from within Collabtive, but backup the entire installation down to the last script—a kind of security you simply don’t have when using a tool on 3rd-party servers.

Collabtive is open source and works wherever PHP does. Have a collaborative tool you love? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

WordPress Android App Coming Soon [RUMOR]

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 02-01-2010-05-2008

It’s still in the rumour stages with no official word yet from the organization, but the blog software platform WordPress has set up a blog at the android.wordpress.org domain, Blog Herald notes.

They did the same for the existing mobile WordPress versions for iPhone and Blackberry, which points strongly to an app in development for those with Android phones.

With the launch of Google’s shiny new Nexus One Android phone in all likelihood just around the corner on January 5, we wonder if WordPress plans to capitalize on the Android buzz by announcing the new app on the same day. Even if not then, it’s probably pretty safe for Android owners to start getting their hopes up that a WordPress app is coming up for the platform in the not-too-distant future.

What features would you like to see in a WordPress app for Android?

64% Prefer Old Twitter Retweets to New Style

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, SEO, Twitter | Posted on 26-12-2009-05-2008

We mixed up our weekly Web Faceoff series a bit this time, with a novel head-to-head battle between Twitter’s old and new style of retweets. In the previous 3-way matchup we saw Digg beat out Reddit and StumbleUpon for social news supremacy, and this week we saw another heated battle come to a close with perhaps a surprising winner.

It’s been a controversial topic since the new feature was first announced, and the results of this week’s poll show that it may still be a contested issue. Eager to see the full results? Head on to find out the final winner…

…old style text-based retweets rule the day! With a 1625 vote (64%) lead over the new style “official” retweets at 699 votes (27%), the old style “add commentary as you wish” version of amplifying someone else’s tweet took the victory by more than a 2 to 1 margin. Almost a tenth of you couldn’t decide between the two, with a 227 vote (9%) tie vote rounding out the poll.

Were you surprised by the results? Do you use one or either version exclusively, or both in context? Let us know in the comments, and tune in next week for the next edition of the Faceoff series.
