Keep This Site’s Typos, Grammar, and Other Mistakes in Check at #corrections [Announcements]

We do our best to bring you high quality content every day—content free from grammar mistakes, typos, and factual errors. Thing is, we’re a small staff working with tight deadlines, and sometimes we fail. Help us out at #corrections.

Inspired by a suggestion from reader gibson_se, we’re dedicating a new hashtag page to post corrections. Why?

gibson_se sums it up pretty well:

Bad spelling and grammar annoy some people. Corrections of bad spelling and grammar annoy other people. It’d be awesome if there was an agreed-upon tag for grammar nazi comments, to allow filtering and quick reaction.

When I see you writing about a “pegbaord”, I can just comment ” #corrections 2nd paragraph 2nd line reads ‘pegbaord’, should be ‘pegboard’”.

Keeping the #corrections comments out of the average user’s comment feed lets people enjoy LH.

Having one tag used for all spelling corrections allows you to find and correct your mistakes quickly.

So here’s how you can help. If you see a correction that needs to be made, either comment on the post with #corrections, or, even better, point your browser to #corrections and enter the comment there. The second method is better, since it’ll keep the correction comment out of the regular post, which means more focused comments and less chance that the conversation will go off topic.

Note: If you’re not a Lifehacker reader, you can find your #corrections pages at the following URLS (assuming your site of choice decides to use the corrections hashtag page):

So go nuts! We’ll still do our best to weed out our errors before you do, but we won’t mind the extra help, either!

Shazam adds Last.FM integration to iPhone apps

Shazam is one of my favorite iPhone apps, and it was one of the first I downloaded from the App Store. Every time I’m in a store or listening to the radio and hear a song I like but don’t know, I let Shazam listen. The free version is still in the store, but just recently they’ve also released Shazam Encore and (Shazam)RED, two paid versions of the app that offer up more functionality (the RED version gives part of the purchase price to charity). Among that new functionality is Last.FM integration: now, you can apparently send any songs you “tag” straight over to the Last.FM app (assuming you have it installed), and make up a radio station directly from there. Pretty slick, and the iTunes description for both apps says that Pandora works as well.

Unfortunately, reviews for the paid version say that the app still includes ads (a weird choice for a paid app), and there are a few reviews that even say the app crashes occasionally (though I’ve never experienced the problem of it not finding a song for me — even with rarities and b-sides, it’s always come through). But it’s a real shame that reviewers are having problems — while Shazam definitely needs to find a way to monetize its service, failing to provide a premium experience on a premium app obviously isn’t the way to do it. Still, if you made the jump to the paid app already, or use Last.FM and/or Pandora often, it might be worth a look.

Mac 101: iTunes artist alerts

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, Twitter | Posted on 01-02-2010-05-2008

Welcome back to Mac 101, our series of tips for new and novice Mac users.

iTunes gets easier to use with every update. One feature, however, has gotten lost in the changes. Artist Alerts lets you receive email notifications of new releases from your favorite artists, which is great. The trouble is that the link to tag an artist isn’t easy to find.

There are two ways receive alert updates from a given artist. First, navigate to that artist’s page (for example, here’s Paramore’s page). On the right hand side, you’ll see “Alert Me.” Click it, enter your account password and then click “OK.”

The other method is from an album page. Here’s the page for Paramore’s album Brand New Eyes. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see “Artist Alerts” under “More Paramore.”

To manage your alerts, click your account name in the upper right-hand corner. Once you’ve entered your password, a new window appears. Scroll down a bit and click “Manage My Alerts.” From there you can de-select certain artists or clear the entire list.

Have fun and spend less time checking up on your favorites manually.

Philips Cam, Muse and Ariaz mark a renaissance for the boring PMP

This is soon enough to market that it’s hard to blame the iPod nano specifically for its appearance, but either way it seems that the Philips Cam is the newest member to the oh-so-small club of MP3 / camera combos. The new player is joined in its life of crime by the new Muse and Ariaz, which at last offer a higher-end aspect to Philips‘ long-lackluster PMP lineup. The Cam does up a 1.8-inch screen, 8GB of storage and a 2 megapixel camera for $100, but the Muse has a full 3.2-inches of touchscreen, 16GB of flash, SD expansion and HDMI out for a mere $50 more. The Ariaz finds a simpler calling, with a 2.4-inch LCD, HDMI, 8GB and an $80 tag. We’ll have to play with these to see if they’re worth taking home from Walmart, but we’re glad to see Philips is trying to stay in the game — we can’t all be lucky enough to be Zune HD owners.

Force Apps to Always Open Maximized [UltraNewb]

It’s annoying having to maximize an application’s window over and over again when you open it—especially when you know you always want it maximized. This oldie-but-goody shortcut trick will cure what ails you.

To fix it all you need to do is right-click on the application shortcut and select Properties. Under the Shortcut tab change the Run dropdown to Maximized.

That’s it! Now any time you open that application it will be full screen.

Every post carrying our UltraNewb tag covers very basic topics in an attempt to initiate our less experienced readers (i.e., the newbs) into the wonderful world of techno-goodness. These are the posts you can email to your friends or parents to explain the really simple things. If you’re thinking: “I’ve known how to do this for *years*,” that’s even better! Share your experience with the UltraNewbs out there and/or advance the subject, and make this post an even better resource for our newbs!

Xbox Live app for iPhone

360 Live [App Store link] certainly isn’t the first Xbox 360 app to hit the iPhone, but it’s definitely one of the most full-featured, offering gamertag management, complete friends list access, messaging capability, games library browsing (with achievements and all), and even a CoverFlow-style friend browser just for good measure. It is pretty darn impressive — if there’s anything you need to do with your Xbox Live account (Gold account required for messaging) while away from your actual 360, this app will let you do it.

There is one issue: it’s $1.99. Technically, that’s not bad — an app like this is probably worth the $2 especially if browsing your friends’ games is something you do often. But the catch is that Microsoft recently stated that all apps that tag in to Xbox 360’s online service must be sold for the low, low price of free. So one of two things will probably happen here — either the app will drop down to free (in which case, you might as well save your $2), or Microsoft might end up blocking it, either on the App Store or in the actual Xbox Live connection. Hopefully, whatever happens, we’ll end up with a solution

Hulu Adds Public Video Tagging [Hulu]

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 24-11-2009-05-2008

You’re always pulling up that episode for friends—the one with the one-armed man, teaching lessons—and need to get to it quickly. With Hulu’s new tagging, you can add up to 30 tags to a video for identification.

At the moment, the tags aren’t working as part of Hulu’s universal search bar, but we’re presuming they’ll get their eventually. In the meantime, the tags—which anyone can add to any video, and have “voted up” by other users—work as a kind of public catalog of what’s happening in each video. Wondering if this is that Family Guy with the ridiculously long chicken suit fight sequence? It’s safe to assume someone will have tagged it as such, and clicking the tag should bring up other videos with that same gag as well.

Photo Tagger for Facebook Now Available to the Public

phototagger-smBack in July, we wrote about Face.com’s Photo Tagger app for Facebook, which was then in beta. The successor to the popular Photo Finder app, Photo Tagger lets you tag all photos in an album in-bulk and automatically publish those results right to Facebook.

Photo Tagger is now out of beta and available for free. You can check out the app’s Facebook page here.

In addition to making tagging faster and more streamlined, Photo Tagger also utilizes the Face Alerts system. Instead of only getting a notification when you are tagged in a photograph by a Facebook user, Face Alerts can identify even untagged photos. You can then visit those photos and confirm (or untag, if it’s something you want to hide from mom) your presence.

Face.com says it has recognized more than 5 million faces in Facebook, which is impressive for a company that has only been around since March.

We love the idea of bulk tagging and believe that Face Alerts to Facebook make the process that more efficient. With millions of photos uploaded to Facebook each month, it’s great to see tools like this simplify what can be an overwhelming process.

Shazam offers paid app, downscales free version

VentureBeat reports that Shazam [iTunes Link], an app that’s long been a favorite among several TUAW staffers, is now offering a paid version. The $5 Shazam Encore (link opens iTunes) offers faster, unlimited tagging of music. A new mode designed for your car will tag whatever music is playing over the radio if you have your iPhone or iPod Touch hooked up to a car adapter. There are also recommendations based off existing tags, the ability to search Shazam’s database, and more.

This new feature set does come at a cost to new users of the Shazam free app. New users can now only tag five pieces of music per month. The VentureBeat article adds that existing users of the free app can still tag with no limits.
