zoomMediaPlus’ zoomIt is the iPhone’s long overdue SD card reader

Sorry if we’re the sort of folks to look a gift SD card reader in the mouth, but while we’re oh-so-happy that Apple finally opened up application-enabled hardware development in iPhone OS 3.0, we really wish an accessory like this had been available for the iPhone right from the start. The new zoomIt SD card reader from zoomMediaPlus adds a bit of external, swappable memory to the iPhone and iPod touch at long last, giving you the ability to store your iPhone’s pictures on the card, or pull stuff off it onto your handset using the free zoomIt app. Interestingly, this is coming to light just a couple weeks after we saw Apple’s own similar solution for getting cameras into the iPad mix — the SD and USB-adapting iPad Camera Connection Kit, which will be a mere $30. There’s no word if Apple’s adapter will work with the iPhone (we doubt it) or if the zoomIt will work with the iPad (perhaps), but the $60 pricetag on the zoomIt is a bit of a turn off. Also, it won’t be shipping until April (though you can pre-order now for a $10 discount), so Apple may very well make up our minds for us by the time March rolls around.

Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

With a couple of leaks to get our mouths watering, Pentax has at last confirmed its new trio of Optio cameras: the I-10 (pictured), H90, and E90. The SLR-inspired I-10 sports a 5x zoom, 12.1 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and 720p / 30fps video capture. There’s also optical image stabilization, smile capture, and face detection to round out the feature set — not bad for a $300 camera. Meanwhile, the similarly classy, 80s-inspired H90 checks most of the same boxes (including HD video, 12.1 megapixel stills and 5x zoom) with a $180 pricetag — we can only guess its sacrifices involve a downgraded lens, sensor or general sense of class. Finally, the E90 throws off all classic pretension and does up 10 megapixels, 3x zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD for a mere $100. No optical stabilization here, but the 6400 ISO and Digital Shake Reduction mode should help out a little bit. All three cameras ship next month. PR is after the break.

We’re circling in on a 250GB PS3 Slim, and this time it’s made an appearance at Spanish retailer GAME with an October 8th release date and a copy of Euro-centric FIFA 2010 along for the ride. No pricetag or box shot, but we like where this is headed all the same.

[Thanks, Alejandro]

Litl Webbook video hands-on

After seeing the Litl Webbook teased along with its not-so-teasing $699 pricetag, there’s no way we could let CES slip by without checking out the easel-like device. And that really is the coolest thing about the Webbook: its 12.1-inch screen flips around to take it from regular laptop into a tent-like, digital photo frame of sorts. Jump past the break for our hands-on impressions and some video.

HP Mini 210 spotted at retail with $350 pricetag

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 03-01-2010-05-2008

The yet-to-be-confirmed HP Mini 210 has popped up at a couple online retail spots already, but now it seems to have landed in the Real World courtesy of a Costco in Hillsboro, Oregon. We’ve seen the netbook listed at $280, $320 and now $350 pricetags, so we really don’t know who to trust anymore (certainly not our parent’s generation), but the sexy design, chiclet keyboard and unibutton trackpad certainly smack of progress.

[Thanks, Dustin W. who sent this in via our new webOS app!]

Acer Aspire One AO532h joins the Pine Trail party with a $299 pricetag

It’s about time that the number one netbook manufacturer officially release details on its Pine Trail packing netbooks. The 10-inch Acer Aspire One A0535h seems to look slightly different than its predecessors, but its brand new Intel Atom N450 CPU, GMA 1350 graphics and promised 10 hours of battery life should give it bragging rights at the family dinner table. The rest of the specs are standard fare – Windows 7 Starter, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and a 4,400 mAh six-cell battery. We’re impressed that Acer has seemed to finagle a $299 price tag, undercutting most of the competition — including the $380 Pine Trail Eee PC 1005PE — by at least $50. It should be available in the coming weeks, but in the meantime you can check the full PR after the break or start searching for that Amazon pre-order page.

RoyalTek outs RPJ-2000 pico projector

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 28-12-2009-05-2008

Taiwanese company RoyalTek’s just announced the first of what will apparently be five pico projectors it releases in 2010. The RPJ-2000 boasts 3M’s second generation LCoS chipset, VGA and NTSC / PAL inputs, and 0.5 watt speakers. The projector can project a 65-inch image at 640 x 480 resolution with 14 lumens of brightness. Disappointingly, there is no onboard storage or media player on this little guy, but we’re betting one or more of those other models RoyalTec is set to unleash probably will have those glorious extras. If you want to use this baby with a Mac, you’ll need to purchase an adapter kit which runs around $43, in addition to the $315 pricetag of the projector itself. There’s no word on sale of the RPJ-2000 outside of Taiwan as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Big Chevy Volt news expected on Jan. 7

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 24-12-2009-05-2008

chevy_volt1General Motors still has some surprises in store when it comes to its highly-anticipated Chevy Volt. The company says it will announce something big on Jan. 7 during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

There are several things this could mean. First, the company could put a definite date on the car’s release next year. So far, we know that the hybrid-electric vehicle will launch first in California before the end of 2010, but nothing more specific. Second, GM might announce that the assumed price point has dropped.

Right now, the estimated pricetag is close to $40,000, still a stretch for middle-class families looking to buy a practical sedan. Much of the price is due to the very expensive lithium ion batteries that will keep it going. Right now, these batteries cost about $900 per kilowatt hour produced. Greentech Media reports rumors that this figure could fall to $500 per kilowatt hour. Even then, the full battery pack would cost $8,000.

With concerns that the batteries, like those in a cellphone, will degrade quickly over time, limiting driving range and top speeds, its unclear how many people will be willing to shell out for the first iteration of the car. It’s predicted that many prospective consumers will wait for the battery technology to be more refined.

They won’t have to wait long for other competitors to release their EV and hybrid models either. Tesla hopes to have its Model S sedan in showrooms by the end of 2011, and both Mitsubishi and Nissan are working on bringing theirs to market in the next two years. So far, the public seems to have the most interest in the Volt, but it will need to keep people excited to maintain its theoretical lead in the market.

GM will be helped in this pursuit by $240 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. Compact Power, the company making batteries for the Volt, has also received $151.4 million to make the car a commercial success as soon as possible.

Super cheap Archos 1 Vision DMP set for release this month

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 06-11-2009-05-2008

Archos has been on a real PMP tear as of late, releasing the Archos 2 Vision, 3 Vision, and the Clipper all in one pop back in August. The company’s now launched yet another Vision model, the entry-level 1 Vision. This tiny little 4GB dude has a 1.5-inch LCD and supposedly gets about 20 hours of battery life per charge. No video support in this puppy, but the €30 (somewhere in the realm of $45) pricetag should temper some of your crushing disappointment over its lack of features. The Archos 1 Vision should be available in Europe by the end of November.
