GE’s ‘Create by Jason Wu’ camera collection unveiled, we go hands on

Keep it simple, stupid. There’s no better way to describe the “Create by Jason Wu” collection unveiled at PMA by General Imaging (a.k.a. GE). The fashion designer’s point and shoot could not be easier: you can shoot, choose flash, and view galleries. That’s it — and in fact, if you need a cue, the shooter reminds you to “hold still” while taking a shot. You’re definitely picking this up for style over substance, but still it’s pleasantly light and captures surprisingly decent images. As for the nitty-gritty specs, we’re looking at 12 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD. The battery charges via wall adapter or the retractible USB plug, which is also how you movie images to your computer of choice. Color options? White, black, gold, red, yellow, blue, green for a metal finish; and white, black and grey for leather. A 4GB version is $180, and 8GB is $230 — no memory cards accepted here, folks. Look for the camera to debut, of all places, via Home Shopping Network on March 16th. Press release after the break, shots below — and while you’re looking, we’ve also got an eyeful of the rest of GE’s point-and-shoot PMA collection.

Casio rolls out Exilim EX-S7 and EX-Z35 point-and-shoots at PMA

It’s a beautiful day in Anaheim, which makes it a perfect day to introduce a couple of compact shooters. Regardless of the fact that we just made that up, Casio’s in full agreement, as it has just pushed out the new Exilim EX-S7 (shown above) and EX-Z35 (shown after the break) at PMA 2010. The pair of low-end cameras offer up 12.1 megapixel sensors, 3x optical zooms and direct-to-web upload options; the S7 ships with a 720p HD video mode and a 2.7-inch rear LCD, while the Z35 gets a VGA movie mode and a 2.5-inch LCD. Neither option will blow any minds, but the relatively low $139.99 / $109.99 (in order of mention) price points just might generate some interest from the novices in attendance.

Sigma’s new DP2s, DP1x and SD15 shooters could make you poor with the click of a shutter

Perhaps it’s unfair to peg as “pricey” a trio of cameras with as yet unannounced pricing, but Sigma’s got a bit of rep in that department. It also has a reputation for cramming incredible sensors inside beautiful, minimalistic form factors, and that certainly doesn’t seem to be changing. The DP2s (pictured) and DP1x compacts (followups to the DP2 and DP1s, respectively) share a tweaked rear design that should hopefully make the notoriously obtuse cameras a bit easier to operate, and the DP1x is also putting the “Quick Set” button and True II processor from the DP2 to bear on its wide-angle view. Both cameras also boast a new, faster auto focus algorithm, but at the root of it all is the same old 14 megapixel DSLR-level CMOS sensor. In fact, Sigma’s also stuffing this DSLR-style sensor into a DSLR, the new SD15. It was originally announced way back in 2008, but it’s apparently really happening this time. It includes the same True II processor, a larger 3-inch LCD, and all those fancy DSLR perks like swappable lenses and a 77-segment AE sensor. Unfortunately, there’s no word on price or release dates for any of this trio just yet.

Samsung’s PMA gifts: HD pocket camcorders, point-and-shoots with AMOLED screens

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 20-02-2010-05-2008

Hey, didja hear the news? PMA is just about upon us, giving all the camera makers a perfect opportunity to refresh their lineup. In no particular order, here’s what Samsung is providing, all set for a Spring 2010 release:

  • New HMX-U15 ($230) and HMX-U20 ($250) 1080p HD pocket camcorders shoot H.264 and feature HDMI out, image stabilization, a 2-inch LCD, and some simple edit options. The U20 also throws in a 3x optical zoom and 10 megapixel stills, while the U15 instead takes 14 megapixel stills.
  • The TL500 is a 10 megapixel camera with 24mm ultra-wide angle lens with an articulating three-inch AMOLED display, perfect for spying around the corner. It supports RAW format, shoots VGA video, and is due out for a hair less than $450.
  • The 10 megapixel TL350 claims 1080p HD video recording with a maximum speed of up to 1,000 frames per second — which invariably drops the video resolution to 138 x 78, but hey, sacrifices must be made. The three-inch AMOLED display and look for it set you back about $350.
  • A pair of 12 megapixel point-and-shoots for the lower end, the waterproof AQ100 ($200) and the “scratch resistant” SL605 ($130), both with 2.7-inch LCDs and 5x optical zoom. The former shoots video in 720p and the latter just VGA.

Plethora of pressers after the break, and we’ll be catching our flight to Anaheim shortly to give hands on impressions and take pictures of cameras that’ll put our DSLRs to absolute shame.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-ZR1 catches Olympic fever

Well, it’s Olympic season once again, and that can only mean one thing: a new round of tie-in products. One of the first to arrive on the scene is a new version of Panasonic’s Lumix ZR1, which boasts an eye-catching red paint job complete with the official Vancouver 2010 logo. Otherwise, this one looks to be the same 12-megapixel point-and-shoot as before, with it packing an 8x optical zoom, a 25 mm wide-angle Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens, a 2.7-inch LCD, and the usual face detection and image stabilization features we’ve come to expect. No word on US availability for this one, but it looks like it’s now available in Canada with an MSRP of $349.99 (or about $330US).

Bang & Olufsen introduces 46-inch BeoVision 10-46 LCD

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 25-01-2010-05-2008

A 46-inch LCD with some high-end, built-in speakers from Bang & Olufsen? Yeah, this one won’t come cheap, but it will definitely make more of a statement in your living room than the average big-screen LCD. Of course, if this one does look a tad familiar, it’s because this new BeoVisoin 10-46 is basically just a larger version of Bang & Olufsen’s existing 40-inch BeoVision 10, which boasts the same brushed aluminum frame, 200Hz refresh rate, and LED backlight as it’s new, larger counterpart. No official word on a price, but the 40-incher came in at just under $10,000, so you can draw your own conclusions. Look for this one to hit “selected markets” (in Europe, most likely) sometime in April — and if it’s still a bit too small for you, you can always consider B&O’s 103-inch BeoVision 4.

[Thanks, John]

Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 25-01-2010-05-2008

With a couple of leaks to get our mouths watering, Pentax has at last confirmed its new trio of Optio cameras: the I-10 (pictured), H90, and E90. The SLR-inspired I-10 sports a 5x zoom, 12.1 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and 720p / 30fps video capture. There’s also optical image stabilization, smile capture, and face detection to round out the feature set — not bad for a $300 camera. Meanwhile, the similarly classy, 80s-inspired H90 checks most of the same boxes (including HD video, 12.1 megapixel stills and 5x zoom) with a $180 pricetag — we can only guess its sacrifices involve a downgraded lens, sensor or general sense of class. Finally, the E90 throws off all classic pretension and does up 10 megapixels, 3x zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD for a mere $100. No optical stabilization here, but the 6400 ISO and Digital Shake Reduction mode should help out a little bit. All three cameras ship next month. PR is after the break.

Philips Cam, Muse and Ariaz mark a renaissance for the boring PMP

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 13-01-2010-05-2008

This is soon enough to market that it’s hard to blame the iPod nano specifically for its appearance, but either way it seems that the Philips Cam is the newest member to the oh-so-small club of MP3 / camera combos. The new player is joined in its life of crime by the new Muse and Ariaz, which at last offer a higher-end aspect to Philips‘ long-lackluster PMP lineup. The Cam does up a 1.8-inch screen, 8GB of storage and a 2 megapixel camera for $100, but the Muse has a full 3.2-inches of touchscreen, 16GB of flash, SD expansion and HDMI out for a mere $50 more. The Ariaz finds a simpler calling, with a 2.4-inch LCD, HDMI, 8GB and an $80 tag. We’ll have to play with these to see if they’re worth taking home from Walmart, but we’re glad to see Philips is trying to stay in the game — we can’t all be lucky enough to be Zune HD owners.

Art Lebedev introduces ‘Fleximus’ camera concept

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 22-12-2009-05-2008

Well, it looks like Art Lebedev has more than the rather ingenious Transparentius concept in store for us today — it’s also introduced this so-called Fleximus concept for a flexible digital camera. Not exactly anything new there, per se, but Art Lebedev seems to be pitching this one specifically to photographers, not just folks that want to peek in hard-to-see places. To that end, the Fleximus comes equipped with a proper viewfinder on one end of camera, which can also be detached and replaced with a 3-inch LCD module (check it out after the break). Of course, this is still just a concept so there’s nothing in the way of specs, but you can get an exhaustive look at the design process at the link below.
