The first paid apps are finally starting to filter into Palm’s App Catalog, giving us all another great reason (after our daily caffeine fix has been properly handled, of course) to blow a buck or two every day of our lives. First up is none other than Air Hockey, an app genre that seems to be taking every platform by storm — we never really thought that the true Dynamo experience could translate well to a couple of fingers on a phone’s display, but we’re just $1.99 away from finding out for sure.
[Thanks, Joe]

Mustek isn’t in the business of making out-there products, but maybe it’s changing its tune by slapping the
Twilight cover on its MER-6T e-reader. Just another 6-inch, e-ink reader sans a content ecosystem or wireless connectivity, we can only imagine that they
want you to stab the MER-6T right in the SD card slot in a fit of vampire e-reader-hating rage. Ah, but then when the blood is slowly dripping off its .4-inch thick body and into its 3.5mm headphone jack, you to realize that it’s got a touchscreen, built-in music player, and that it comes with a luring wrist strap all which make you want to ravish the device forever into the night. You sick bastards, Mustek. There’s no pricing on the MER-6T, but the experience seems pretty priceless.

ASUS hasn’t exactly been tight-lipped about its DR-950 e-reader — you know, with it outing photos and all — but apparently the 9-inch E Ink, touchscreen reading device will be ready for buyers in April. ASUS told the guys at Electric Pig that it’s currently in process of shopping around for content partners, but plans to have the e-reader to market by springtime with a price tag in the range of £250 (about $354). Not too bad, though it’s tough to get too jazzed about a black-and-white model with the OLED color DR-570 version on the horizon.

It’s this week! It’s almost a sure bet that we’ll finally, after all of these years, see the Apple tablet unveiled this week, and to celebrate, Frog Design (the company responsible for many of Apple’s designs back in the day) has given Wired some old shots of prototype tablets from the Cupertino company … from 1983. Of course, Apple has released tablet-like devices before, and they’ve been thinking about this type of computer for a long time. But back in 1983, they apparently commissioned some concepts for an unreleased tablet called “Bashful” (so called because it was designed to work with the Snow White “industrial design language” that Apple used back then in the //c and other releases.
As you can see above, the tablet isn’t exactly “elegant” by today’s standards, but it is interesting how similar it actually is to many of today’s smartphones and handhelds, considering that we’re talking about almost 30 years ago now. One model had a floppy drive attached (which was gigantic), and apparently they even considered a version with a phone on it as well. We still don’t know for sure what Apple’s release this week will look like, but it’s fascinating to think just how far back the planning for this week’s unveiling actually went.

We don’t think we’re over-reaching when we say that this device, Sungworld’s just-unveiled 7-inch, Android touchscreen MID looks a bit… well, Apple-ish, and we hear that the UI (which we haven’t yet seen in action) will take cues from the company as well. Regardless, this thickish-looking puppy will boast an ARM926 CPU, 128MB of memory, 2GB of storage, and two USB ports. It’s also supposedly going to be available in pink, blue, green, purple and black, and though we don’t know pricing yet, we assume that if
that tablet we’ve heard so much about in recent weeks fails to materialize next Wednesday, well… okay, this won’t be a great stand-in. Sorry.

Maybe it’s all the talk of the ITG xpPhone that’s made ViewSonic’s VPC08 come out of hiding, but the phone/MID contraption is finally making a video appearance and revealing why it’s so damn thick. Unlike the xpPhone the VPC08 is actually an ordinary feature phone with a 2-inch display stuck on top of an Atom Z500-powered 4.3-inch MID. Uh, innovative? Not so much since it doesn’t appear that the two work in conjunction, but we do know that the phone supports EV-DO, and that the MID portion packs 512MB RAM, an 8GB SSD with Windows XP, and WiFi. For those that are at all interested in holding this mega-device up to an ear, it looks like it will be sold only in China for a whopping 4800 Yuan ($705). No word if that price includes pants with extra-large pockets. We’ll be waiting for the Moorestown-powered LG GW990 to get Atom in a phone, but we do urge you to check out this beast of a “phone” in action in the video after the break.

A tipster who has proven to be reliable in the past says that Barnes and Noble’s Nook will get a software update this week — most likely around Tuesday. The update itself looks to be fairly large, improving some of the major issues we’ve had with the e-reader — like page refresh rate and a lot of other little performance issues. Our tipster also says they’ve played with an updated unit and that it’s much, much better, so we’re interested to see for ourselves when the update goes down. Until then, check out the (partial) list of bugs and fixes we’re hearing the update will include after the break.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wants you to know he’s really, really sorry for pulling Nineteen Eighty-Four off of our Kindles. In fact, the guilt expressed in this public apology is comparable to a modern day Dimmesdale — he may have even seared a mark into his flesh for all we know. The short message calls the company’s “solution” to what happened “stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles,” adding that he and the company “deserve the criticism we’ve received.” Look Jeff, we’re still gonna be appalled by these beyond the pale actions even if you say it won’t happen again… but if you really need a hug, we’ll be here.

Several major publishers confirmed ongoing rumors Tuesday by announcing a partnership to develop an online “store” for digital publishing content. Condé Nast (Ars Technica’s parent company), Hearst, Meredith, News Corp., and Time Inc. are all involved in the project, aimed at bringing the traditional magazine experience to digital devices such as mobile phones, handhelds, and tablets. The venture does not yet have a name, but will eventually be open to all publications—not just those from the joint partners.
The first step will involve developing open standards for the participating publications—not just to address formatting issues, but also to make it easier to sell ads in the new format. According to the official announcement, the companies say that the goal is to offer a publishing platform that can be used on multiple devices while maintaining the “distinctive look and feel” of each publication.

There may have been plenty of folks pushing Sony to ditch UMD once and for all with the
PSP Go, but there’s at least as many sorry to see it left behind, as evidenced by the continued strong sales of the venerable PSP-3000. While nothing’s official just yet, it looks like Logitech just might now be set to bridge the divide the two handhelds with a UMD drive add-on of some sort for the PSP Go. That word comes form an unnamed source speaking to
CVG, who reportedly said that the only problem with the drive is that “
it’ll make the PSP a little bulky,” but offered no other details. Of course, there’s also the small problem that the add-on would only add more to the cost of the PSP Go along with the bulk, thereby making the PSP-3000 an even more attractive option, but we’ll hold off on any futher speculation until this thing gets a bit more real.
