TeleNav: GPS helped guys get out of the Valentine’s Day doghouse

TeleNav is known for its phone-based GPS navigation products, particular the AT&T Navigator app for iPhone. The company has over 11 million subscribers to its services, so it has a lot of data to sift through to find interesting location search trends.

That data showed that GPS location searches helped a lot of guys keep from getting in deep trouble with their significant others in the period surrounding Valentine’s Day. Mark Burfeind of TeleNav tells us that they put together all the florist and flower-related GPS searches in their products around Valentine’s Day, over 11 million users total, and “found that GPS may have come to the rescue for last minute shoppers.” Among the interesting finds:

  • During Valentine’s Week (Feb. 8 – 14), searches for flowers increased more than 5.5 times over the previous, non-holiday week of Feb. 1 – 7.
  • In fact, searches on Valentine’s Day alone outnumbered searches for the entire week of Feb. 1-7.
  • It looks like GPS may have helped some people get out of the “doghouse” following Valentine’s Day. Searches for flowers by TeleNav’s users the Monday following Valentine’s Day were twice as high as those on an average Monday.

How about you, TUAW reader? Did you use your favorite iPhone navigation app to find flowers, candy, or an available restaurant reservation for Valentine’s Day? Leave us a comment and let us know if your iPhone’s GPS saved the day.

HP kicks out new touchscreen cameras and camcorders

HP just dropped five new cameras and three new camcorders at , including a few with touchscreen controls and revamped UIs. The $109 CW450t (pictured above) and $149 CW460t cameras have 2.7- and 3-inch touchscreen, respectively, and 4x optical zoom, while the $169 V5061u and $199 V5560u camcorders have 3-inch touchscreens shoot full 1080p — the V5560u adds in a 5x optical zoom. That’s not all for HP’s low-end imaging assault: there’s also the $99 CW450 and $129 SW450 cams with 4x zooms, the $149 PW550z with a 5x zoom, and the $109 V1020h camcorder that shoots 720p. Yes, it’s a confusing mish-mash of letters, numbers, and bargain-basement prices — isn’t the low-end point-and-shoot market just delightful?

Motorola Devour in the wild once again

We’ve already seen the Motorola Devour in the wild once, but with the official Verizon launch right around the corner and pre-sales underway, it looks like at least one more unit has made it out into the world. Great — but we’d like a video of this thing and its mid-range processor running Flash, please.

[Thanks, Zach]

New Chromium OS build brings full NVIDIA Ion acceleration, hope for the future

Chrome OS. Man, seems like Google has gotten its hands into quite a few things since we last heard of that, but the underground is keeping things lively with new builds of Chromium OS — you know, to keep us satisfied while we wait for the real deal. Hexxeh has just unleashed its latest build, dubbed Flow, which makes a few critical improvements, particularly if you’re planning to install the system onto an Ion-based rig. Flow includes full NVIDIA Ion acceleration, and it also “improves battery life” while making the automatic update… um, work. Hit that source link to get your download on, and if you’ve been holding out for fear of trying something new, you’ve got your whole weekend to fix things should things go terribly awry.

[Thanks, Amrita]

Dell Mini 5 docking station with HDMI port spotted in bizarre Greek video

Wow, some nice gadget fairy has just made our wish come true! Soon after our Dell Mini 5 impressions post went live, eagle-eyed reader unclepain reported that the phone’s docking station has made a quiet appearance in T3 Greek Edition’s bizarre hands-on video (seriously, we get the “DELLICIOUS” joke, but does that poor bloke really have to stand like that throughout the video?). According to the tiny bit of English we heard, the dock will have HDMI output and a USB port (for connecting to the computer, we presume) on the back. You can also see the short transparent back support when the presenter undocks the phone. Now, bundle this with Mini 5 or throw it à la carte at a reasonable price and we’re sold. Eccentric footage after the break.

[Thanks, unclepain]

Nokia cancels NFC-equipped 6216 handset

Visa may be pushing ahead to bring NFC to phones via microSD cards, but it looks like phones with built-in NFC capabilities have now suffered a bit of a setback, as Nokia has officially canceled its already delayed 6216 handset. That phone was a rather unimpressive candy bar in most respects, but it was the first such phone that would have tied NFC payments to a carrier’s SIM card, which Nokia had hoped would have been enough to at least give it a foothold, if not kick-start a wave of NFC handsets. For its part, Nokia isn’t offering too many details on the reasons for the cancellation, saying only that it felt “the quality of the consumer experience was not what it needed to be,” and adding that its “commitment to NFC remains as strong as ever.”

Yamaha brings Tenori-On Orange to US soil for $700, dares you to rock your own socks off

Here’s hoping you didn’t pay your British bud to bring you one of those fancy Tenori-On Orange music makers over the holidays, ’cause if so, you just paid an absurd premium to get it a few months ahead of time. Oh, and now you’ve got an AC adapter that’s bigger than your face. Nice. At long last, experimental musicians here in America are being treated to a native version of the Tenori-On O, which is the “more affordable” sibling to the also-shipping Tenori-On W. Functionally, the new O model is exactly the same as the original W model, except it can’t be operated with batteries, its 256 orange LEDs are only visible on one side of the unit and it’s encased in plastic; Yamaha’s marketing the O to producers and studio hounds, whereas the W is made more for live performances. Whatever your fancy, the O should be available in a matter of moments for around $699.99 on the street, while the W can be had for around $300 more.

Active Media Products serves up Aviator-2 external USB 3.0 SSD

You know what’s better than a new solid state drive? An Olympic gold medal. You know what else? A USB 3.0 SSD, of course! Active Media Products has just dished out details on its latest device, the Aviator-2 external USB 3.0 solid state drive. Available in case-only, 64GB and 128GB flavors, this one promises transfer rates as high as 4.8Gbits/sec (that’s ten times the rate of USB 2.0, just so you’re well aware), and considering the 3- x 5-inch size, you should have no issues slipping this into the chest pocket of your Members Only jacket. We’re in no place to comment on the difficultly of slipping $34.95, $259.95 or $449.95 (in order of mention) out of your wallet, though, which is essentially required in order to take one home. That’s the breaks, kid!

Macworld 2010: A few more video tidbits

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General, Twitter | Posted on 19-02-2010-05-2008

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a week since I left Macworld Expo 2010 to head home. Last night, I finally went through the last snippets of video from the Expo and put together this short compendium of three interviews.

The first company I talked to was Telnic.org, a group which champions the use of the .tel top level domain as a type of global address book. There’s a free iPhone app available for updating your .tel domain information from anywhere.

Next, I visited shortly with John from Agile Partners, the developers behind GuitarToolkit. TUAW’s resident musician, Mat Tinsley, reported on this app last September and it’s quite impressive.

Finally, I talked with the folks from myRete, who have created an interesting social networking app called WhosHere. There are over one million users of WhosHere, and with the free texting and VoIP capabilities of the app you can ask the locals in cities around the world for travel tips or a date. Want to perfect your language skills with a native speaker? WhosHere is an easy way to find someone to chat with.

As with several earlier videos, this suffers from a bit of mic noise. Our apologies!
