GoGear Muse refresh sports touchscreen, Songbird media player, HDMI output

Looks like the Android-powered Connect isn’t the only bit of GoGear news coming out of the armed Philips compound as of late. The Pocket-lint gang have got their hands on a refresh of the GoGear Muse and we should say that the thing looks pretty sweet. In addition to a rare new modern interface solution called “touchscreen,” this bad boy eschews Windows Media Player in favor of the open source Songbird player, and sports an FM radio, iPlayer, Audible, FLAC, and APE support. As for video playback, the device’s 3.2-inch display is complimented by a 720p HDMI out. Look for this bad boy in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes; all models include a 32GB microSD slot. We’re still holding out on the definitive word regarding price, but apparently Philips is estimating something in the £100 – £120 ($155 – $185) range.

Broadcom announces Android support, three-pack of chips to make your phones more awesome

Chip maker Broadcom has unveiled no fewer than three new mobile-themed hunks of silicon this week in preparation for MWC in just a few days’ time. You ready for this? Alright, first up we’ve got the catchily-named BCM20751, which performs the rather ordinary tasks of GPS, Bluetooth, and FM radio management but also throws in an audio processor to offload some work from the phone’s primary CPU, which the company says can reduce battery consumption enough to improve playback time by up to 100 percent in some situations. Next up, we’ve got the BCM4751, a GPS receiver that Broadcom’s confident is going to set a new benchmark for mobile location-based services; a complete setup takes less than 30 square millimeters of precious board space and is claimed to be a guru at picking up weak signals all the while sipping power. Finally, the BCM2049 supports Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, FM (both transmitting and receiving), and Bluetooth Low Energy — something that was recently adopted for standardization in Bluetooth 4.0. All three should be on display at the show next week. That’s not all, though — the company is also announcing comprehensive support for Android across much of its product range, which seems like a pretty prudent business decision all things considered.

Yinlips busts out a 6-inch, E Ink-boasting e-reader

Yinlips is jumping on the e-reader bandwagon with a 6-inch, touchscreen E Ink reader all its own. While we don’t have full specs for this think-looking little guy yet, we do know that it supports a wide array of file formats, supposedly gets around 20 hours of battery life, and that it’s got an FM radio with recording functions. There’s no word on pricing, other specs, or even the official name of this product yet (possibly just ‘E-Book’?), so make your suggestions in the comments, and we’ll try to get word to Yinlips for you.

Mom Gets Tat in Exchange For Daughter’s Justin Bieber Tickets [VIDEO]

Oh, man, we haven’t seen a video of a poorly thought-out tattoo since this guy was shilling for Ray-Ban (although there’s talk that the ink was fake). Thank heavens for this lady, who got a tat of a DJ’s face on her lower back so that her daughter could meet Justin Bieber, who is apparently very popular with the kids.

This video has been out for a few days now, but it’s been racking up the views — mostly for the sheer “Why, God, why?” factor of it all. We all know that YouTube sensation turned super popular pop star Justin Bieber makes people do crazy things (and sometimes gets folks fired for not being scarily attentive enough), but this little stunt takes the cake.

Apparently the host of FM radio show Mack at Night has a little project called “Tats for Tickets,” which promises just that. In this case, a mother got what is commonly known as a tramp stamp of the DJ’s face (a rather flattering representation, I might add) in exchange for a meeting between her daughter and the singer. Check it out below and be happy that this girl is not your daughter. (Bonus awfulness points for the “Pants on the Ground” reference.)

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLVIII: Xderia X2 packs 2X the KIRF

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X2 may have been delayed until next month, but official delays have never held back the inevitable KIRF hordes, as exemplified by this intriguing “Xderia X2.” Not content with simply approximating SE’s stylish QWERTY slider, this one goes the extra mile with a KIRF edition of Windows Mobile, not to mention some impressive specs like a 12.1 megapixel camera, dual SIM card slots, and a built-in FM radio — which may or may not match the phone’s actual specs. No word on a price just yet, but we’re guessing you’ll be able to buy anywhere from four to fourteen of these for the price of an actual X2.

Xbox Dashboard Update Brings Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter, and Zune Video to Your TV [Updates]

The annual fall update for the Xbox 360 dashboard is here, bringing with it support for Last.fm radio, Facebook and Twitter integration, and HD streaming through Zune’s online marketplace.

To grab the update, just fire up your Xbox and sign into Xbox Live. You should be prompted to apply the update, after which you’ll have access to all the new features. The Last.fm addition is probably the most exciting update for most of our readers, but the Facebook and Twitter integration looks pretty solid (and let’s face it, Twitter and Facebook are both determined to find a home on every single electronic device you own). The Zune marketplace integration seems like a decent option for instant-streaming HD video rentals, though the selection doesn’t look that impressive at the moment (we still prefer the Netflix integration). Still, if you’ve got a 360, it’s certainly a worthwhile update.

MPIO V7 PMP hits October 26th, 2009, we struggle to contain ourselves

It’s been a pretty long while since we heard anything from MPIO — so this is certainly good news. The V7 — a 3-inch PMP which will apparently boast a (possibly capacitive) touchscreen LCD, an accelerometer, and an FM radio, at a thickness in the neighborhood of 10.5mm. We also know that it’ll come in both 4GB and 8GB varieties — but specs beyond this are sadly absent. We’ll see what else we can dig up for you, but look for it to run ₩129,000 for the 4GB model and ₩159,000 ($109 and $134, respectively) for the 8 when it launches on Korea on October 26th.

companion photo for Week in Apple: failing Time Capsules, Snow Leopard bug, Google-Apple ties

Google and Apple continued to cut their official ties this week while Apple irked musicians with iTunes LP. The company also admitted to a major Snow Leopard bug and may be working on adding FM radio functionality to the iPhone. Catch up with our roundup of the week’s top Apple news:

Time Capsule failures lead to opening of virtual cemetery: Is there a Time Capsule pandemic going on? There may be, as more and more people are reporting dying units to the Time Capsule Memorial Register.

Google-Apple board ties severed; collaboration next to go? Google and Apple no longer share any board members thanks to increasing legal scrutiny from various government entities. Because of this, the two companies can no longer afford to be public friends, but does that mean the end of collaboration between them? It might.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXVII: PXP-2000 aspires to little more than playing NES games, a host of video formats

If we were tickled by how quickly the PSP Go was hacked, we must say that we’re surprised at how long it took for this bad boy to get KIRFed. And as most shanzai manufacturers do, they packed as many features into this portable as they could: 4.3-inch display (compared to the PSP Go’s 3.8-incher), all kinds of retro gaming support (including NES/Famicom, Gameboy / Gameboy Color, SNES, SFC), a camera of some sort, FM radio, microSD card slot (the device’s only form of storage), TV out, and generous video codes: RM, RMVB, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, MP4, DAT, and MOV. Not exactly “aspirational” at $84, but we’ll take it nonetheless.

N900 hacked to replace the innards of a Speak & Spell, can never bring back your childhood

Posted by Nikos | Posted in General | Posted on 21-09-2009-05-2008

Nokia has been handing out the N900 for selective “artsy” uses lately through its “Push” program, and the folks at Tinker it now! sure seem to have put their model to good use. They’ve paired the device with all matter of nostalgia, including a Rolodex, FM radio and a 3D Viewmaster. Our favorite by far, however, is the Speak & Spell hack, which puts the gargantuan Speak & Spell keyboard to good use in penning text messages for the N900 — which displays them in the classic font and even articulates your words with a speech synthesis engine. It’s all a testament to the flexibility of Linux, hacker ingenuity and of course liberal application of Arduino, but it’s also a little advertorial-ey, so you might want to leave your gag reflex at home for this one.
