If you’re one of the people who has, according to Adobe’s John Nack, run the total number of downloads of the Photoshop.com Mobile [free, iTunes Link] app to 6.5 million, then we have information you need to know. Of course, you may have already checked the App Store app to find the update to version 1.1.021 of Photoshop Mobile for iPhone, but if you haven’t then you should mosey on over to the App Store Updates and it should magically appear for you.

The new version of the Photoshop.com Mobile app adds a new sharpen tool, more photo borders, and (for U.S. users only) playback of videos hosted on Photoshop.com.

You’ll need to be running iPhone 3.0 or later on your device to enjoy using Photoshop.com Mobile.

TUAWAdobe updates Photoshop Mobile app for iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 16:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

FolderSize Displays What’s Eating Your Hard Drive Space [Downloads]

Windows only: Free portable application FolderSize quickly analyzes the contents of any hard drive or specific folder on your computer to help you hunt down your hard drive hogs and free up space.

(Click the image above for a closer look.)

FolderSize is another in a relatively long line of similar tools (our favorite is the previously mentioned WinDirStat), but it boasts a couple of nice features that sets it apart from most.

First and foremost, it’s portable, which means it’s the perfect app to throw on your PC repair kit thumb drive. Second, where some of these tools can take a while to analyze your hard drive usage, FolderSize seems to run really fast and light. On the downside, it’s not as feature rich as most of the alternatives, and you can’t drill down through the results or even open folders in a new Explorer window from its interface. You can, however, zoom in and out on the window for a closer look at folders using your mouse’s scrollwheel.

If you’re going to do some serious file analysis where you can install something, I’d suggest going with WinDirStat. If you just need something fast you can carry on your thumb drive, this app seems like a good option. FolderSize is a free, open-source download, Windows only.

Flickr Schedulr Automatically Uploads Pics to Flickr When It’s Convenient [Downloads]

Windows only: Free, open-source application Flickr Schedulr lets you queue photos you want to upload to the popular photo-sharing site, Flickr, then schedule specific times you’d like to upload them.

Uploading high-quality images to sites like Flickr is a great way to share pics with friends and family, but it can also clog your upload tubes when you need a good internet connection, and managing your uploads can be a pain, particularly if you back up a lot of images to Flickr.

When you first launch Flickr Schedulr, you’ll need to give it access to your Flickr account. The application works in conjunction with the Windows Tasks Scheduler so that, whenever it’s run, it’ll start uploading the next batch of images in its queue. It could, for example, be set to upload a new picture every day at a specific time.

The application could be a bit easier to use, and it’d be nice if you didn’t have to set it up with Tasks Scheduler (you can see more details on how to do this at the app’s homepage), but if you do a lot of uploading to Flickr, it could come in particularly handy. Flickr Schedulr is a free download, Windows only, requires .NET 2.0.

Hulu Desktop Integration Brings Hulu to Windows 7 Media Center [Downloads]

Windows only: Free application Hulu Desktop Integration brings Hulu’s remote-friendly desktop app to your Windows Media Center.

Whether or not you’re a fan of Windows operating systems, there’s no denying that Windows has one of the best media center apps available (especially if you want to turn your PC into a media center powerhouse on the cheap). It’s got its problems (TV recordings are encoded in an absolutely irritating DRMed file format), but it ships with Windows (so in a sense is free) and it can extend to common hardware like the Xbox 360 with aplomb (see the media center powerhouse link above).

Now that sites like Hulu have become a viable destination for free TV, Hulu integration seems only natural, and Hulu Desktop Integration makes it simple for users to jump between Windows 7 Media Center and Hulu Desktop.

When clicking on HULU in Windows 7 Media Center, the software automatically closes Windows Media Center, Starts HULU Desktop Maximized in full screen. When you are done with HULU Desktop, click on Exit in the main menu, the software will automatically start Windows Media Center back up in full screen mode.

Hulu Desktop Integration is freeware, works with Windows 7. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with extenders.

Windows only: AVG 9 Free—one of the most popular free antivirus apps on the market—is now available for download.

A couple weeks back, the popular antivirus maker AVG released AVG 9 with performance improvements and other updates, but on launch only the commercial version of AVG 9 was available. The fact of the matter is that most AVG users are probably using AVG Free, the freeware version of the app, so if that’s the case for you, good news: AVG 9 Free is now ready for download.

Disk2vhd Turns Your PC Into a Virtual Machine [Downloads]

Windows only: Free Sysinternals application Disk2vhd takes a snapshot of your PC, and turns it into a Microsoft Virtual PC virtual hard drive—while your system is up and running.

Using the software, which requires no installation, is as easy as launching, selecting the drives you would like to create into a virtual disk, giving the file a name, and clicking the Create button. The utility uses the same volume snapshot feature that Windows uses for backup utilities, so it doesn’t matter if software is running or not—but you’ll have best results if you create the virtual disk on a separate drive.

Once you’ve created your virtual drive, you can use the free Microsoft Virtual PC to boot the image of your PC, which you can then use for testing, or just as a great way to completely backup your computer. Disk2vhd is a free download for Windows only.

STDU Viewer Is an Impressive Tabbed Document Reader [Downloads]

Windows only: Free application STDU Viewer is an all-in-one tabbed reader for electronic documents, supporting everything from your standard PDF to the less common comic book archive (CBZ/CBR). It’s free, fairly lightweight, and snappy.

(Click the image above for a closer look.)

STDU has a nice browser-style tabbed interface for viewing multiple documents in one window, supports most electronic document formats you would want (including TXT, TIFF, PDF, DjVu, Comic Book Archive, and XPS), displays thumbnails of pages in the sidebar, and allows for bookmarking in documents. As FreewareGenius points out, it also has a really nice text search tool that displays all the results in a list rather than requiring you to jump all over the document.

It may not have been one of the favorites on our readers’ list of the five best PDF readers, but it supports a lot more than just PDFs, and it’s a formidable viewer if you’re just looking for a change in your default reader.

STDU Viewer is freeware for non-commercial use, Windows only.

PhotoFilmStrip Creates Ken Burns-Style Video from Images [Downloads]

Windows/Linux: Free, open-source application PhotoFilmStrip creates video from photographs quickly and easily, complete with effects, a soundtrack, and smooth zoom in/out effects (commonly referred to as the Ken Burns effect).

The cheesy cat video above demonstrates PhotoFilmStrip in action. Creating your video from still images with the app is a breeze. Just drag and drop pictures you want to use into the application, select the effects you want to use (if any), determine the settings for the pan and zoom Ken Burns effect, and, when you’re done, add some background music and export the video to DVD, XviD, or one of the other supported formats. (It can even export in HD.)

PhotoFilmStrip is a free, open-source application for Windows and Linux only. (Mac users, iMovie actually comes with its own Ken Burns effect for still images.) As FreewareGenius points out, it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but it handles what it does really well. If you give it a go, let’s hear how you like it in the comments.

Copy Path Puts a File’s Location in Your Clipboard [Downloads]

Windows only: Free utility Copy Path adds a new entry to your right-click context menu that lets you quickly copy the full path to any file with two clicks of your mouse. Why would you want something like this?

I can think of plenty of reasons this functionality would come in handy, but we mentioned the most useful back when we covered ClipPath, a similar tool:

[L]et’s say you’re looking at a file sitting happily inside its folder, but you want to send it to a friend with Gmail. In order to do so, you’d have to browse through your whole file system to find the file from your browser, even though you were already staring at the file in the first place.

With Copy Path installed, all you’ve got to do is right-click the file you want to upload, copy the path, and paste it into the attachment text box. The same holds true for uploading a file to any web site, naturally. It’s a small difference, to be sure, but it’ll definitely save time, and nothing’s more irritating than navigating to a file using your browser’s upload dialog when you’re already staring at the file in Explorer.

Copy Path is a free download, Windows only.

Explore&Burn Quickly Burns Files and Folders to Disc via Right-Click [Downloads]

Windows only: Free application Explore&Burn adds an entry to your right-click context menu that allows you to quickly burn files and folders to CD or DVD.

This right-click utility is dead simple: Click any file, folder, or disk image (e.g., ISO, IMG), select the Burn to disc context menu option, and go through the very quick burning wizard. The application supports most types of burnable media (including Dual Layer discs) and skips the bloat that accompanies a lot of burning software, opting instead for a completely pared down interface and footprint.

Explore&Burn is freeware, Windows only.
